2023 QR Code Treasure Hunt
The third annual QR hunt! Scan codes at various locations across Utah to collect clues leading to the final treasure.
How to play & rules
Free for everyone. Solve a clue, find a hidden QR plaque, scan it, and race other teams along the trail.
Getting started
- The hunt is free and open to anybody and everybody. You just need an account.
- Play solo or with up to 8 people. Start a team and share its invite link, or join a friend's. You can join at any point, even mid-hunt.
How a checkpoint works
- At the start time the first clue appears on this page. Solve it to work out where a QR plaque is hidden.
- Scan the plaque, then answer its question. The answer comes from solving the clue, not from anything written at the spot, so a photo of the plaque won't help anyone.
- A correct answer completes that QR for your whole team, and after a wait your next clue opens. Your play page always shows the countdown and the exact time.
- Scanning a code your team hasn't reached yet unlocks nothing. Your current clue is always on your play page.
Waiting fairly
- The further behind the leading team you are, the shorter your wait for the next clue.
- The leader still gets every clue first, so nobody gets ahead by falling behind.
Cut the wait & check-in photos
- Some QRs let you cut the wait: follow the instructions on your play page, post about the hunt, and upload a screenshot. You can do this once per QR while your wait is running, and the card shows exactly how many minutes it saved.
- Some QRs ask for a check-in photo after the answer. It's private to your team and to Dave and John, location data is removed, and please ask before photographing anyone else (a parent or guardian for children).
Prizes
- Each QR carries a cash prize for the first team to complete it.
- There's no limit on wins: the same team can take the prize on as many QRs as it reaches first.
- Every winning run is checked by Dave and John before it's confirmed, and prizes are paid after the hunt. Until a winner is confirmed, every team can keep playing.
Play fair
- A team is disqualified for faking a check-in photo or for moving, hiding or damaging a QR plaque.
- Leave every plaque exactly where you found it, for the teams behind you.
- Our sponsors don't know the answers. Please don't disrupt their operations by asking for additional help.
- Some QR plaques are placed inside of buildings. Please be respectful of both property and business hours.
- Dave and John have full discretion to review any team and disqualify it for breaking these rules or the Terms.
Stay safe
- Plaques are a mix of town and trail spots. Nothing is buried and nothing needs climbing, so if you're digging or scrambling, you're in the wrong place.
- On trail legs, bring water and sunscreen and watch for wildlife.
- Leave no trace: pack out what you bring, and respect posted signs and the people around you.
- You take part at your own risk.
